I would have given almost anything for a pair of Mary Jane’s….

It was a cold winter’s day and the big yellow school bus pulled up in front of my Grandmamma and Granddads house. 257760778642771095_no2NNRyz_c I could smell the bus fumes mixed with the fresh mud as the soft rain continued to fall. I watched that old bus for a long time as it went down the country road. It had one more stop, a little rich girl named Ginger Landers who lived about half mile down the road. Her parents went to church with my grandparents in Pixley, California. She took great pride in sticking her tongue out at me.girl-sticking-out-tongue_244x183 My Grandmamma would say, ‘Don’t pay any attention to her, that tongue will break off one day.” I lived with my grandparents north of town in a large white farmhouse with a screed in back porch. It was Friday and no one was home and the back door was locked. So I sat on the back steps and then went into the barn where I could dry out. I got scared, I really felt afraid, but I really do not know why? Maybe too much time had gone by, but I found myself out in the field of mud crying, and thinking I should run to the Landers house. So I did, and no one was there either. Confused, scared and worried, I ran back home just in time for my grandparents to drive up. I was safe and warm in no time, Grandmama said that they were sorry that I was alone. It could be because I was only 5 years old.

My Aunt Sweetie (Lily Ellen) and I would sleep out on the porch on hot nights. We would wait for the soft breeze that came long after the sun went down. I loved that we could lie on our back and see the stars. Sweetie knew where the big dipper and all the other signs in the dark sky. My grandparents (Ethel and Albert) gave all their children and grandchildren nicknames. I am Doll

(Mary Ellen). Sleeping on the porch was nice because we had no air conditioning; I think Sweetie wanted to be a boy. She played baseball and hung out with the boys more than girls. She always wore either a baseball hat or a green beanie. I loved that beanie; she had charms and buttons of all types on the beanie.tkhp-b_th3 She would get stuff out of the cracker jacks box and pin it to that beanie then give me the cracker jacks sometimes. Aunt Sweetie also had wonderful dolls that she never played with. She had Cuppie dolls400255732892 imagesCABHJK46 and baby dolls in all sizes, and I could not touch them. Ones and awhile she would take me to the hall closet and let me look at them. No touching!!!! I wanted to be her for a long time. She was a true tomboy. And I thought she was so pretty.Grandmama_and_the_kids (2)

The front door was for company, we were the back door kind of family.imagesCANERMXS

School was hard for me. I didn’t like Church school. It seemed like everyone but me lived with their parents, and they were rich. I was poor and knew it, only because the clothes they wore were much nicer than mine. And to make things worse, I was the only redhead in this school.Mary Ellen age 5_edited-1 Add to that I was really thin, skinny really. So there was lots of name calling.. There have always been Bullies in school. I was not good about food. I disliked most everything. But I loved catsup sandwiches;!C!Lv9Mw!Wk~$(KGrHqN,!lMEz 6WFj36BNB-i21vGQ~~_3  kids called them blood sandwiches. So often I would not eat at all until I got home, fearing that someone would say something. Because they did.

I was scared of so many things, cars, the bus, dogs, and teachers. I was afraid of the dark and I was lonely. I don’t remember any friends in Christian school. Not until 2nd grade.

Merle was a good friend, she had long blonde hair. I loved her hair. We ate lunch together every day. I remember after a rain she and I jumped puddles in the school yard. You know the puddles that you could see the blue sky with fluffy white clouds in. No one made fun of me any longer; I was one of the first kids picked for all sports. Baseball, races, I could out run any boy in school.

I was living in southern California by the second grade with my parents. My sister Sharon was born in Long Beach, and we lived on Signal Hill. She was like having a live baby doll. I remember Mama hanging her diapers on the clothes line. Kids from the apartment played a lot under that clothes line because it was round.clothesline My Dad worked hard but there was never enough money. So I continued to want nice clothes like the others girls wore. But clothes were hard to come by. I think the hardest part for me was shoes. At the start of school I got a new pair of Oxfords,rupert-oxfords-main they were always a little too big so that I would not grow out of them too soon. I had the worst blisters from them every year. Band-Aids did not help. So often there was blood on my socks. In a short time my shoes would started to smile, that mint they had to go to the shoe repair man. My Mama called him by his first name…and it was like we were going to see a friend.307621304_230978d3ef_z Children do some really strange things sometimes. I would take my socks off and put the socks in my lunch sack and pretend that I had pretty shoes. My legs where so thin, this must have looked just awful. Then put my socks back on walking home from school. I would have given just about anything for a pair of Mary Jane’s.a20792a1374ea8519ab271_m

I was not a good student…although no one would have known that I had a condition in the 50’s, but today we call it ADD.selft I was always thinking about something else, looking out the window, or worried about what was going on at home. Just a messed up little girl. I felt stupid, but had no way of sharing this. It was hard being me. I remember teachers saying to me, your test scores are really good, you should be getting your work done and having better grades. Okay!

I found these pages I had written years ago. So thought I would share this today. If you open enough boxes, you may be surprised at what you find.

Secrets……

7secrets Today I woke thinking of secrets. We all have some. We keep them because it would hurt others. Even if you shared, you have no evidence of what you are saying is true.

Just a thought, something I am dealing with.

On a happier note…..

Since we no longer have a bedroom set….I have always thought it would be fun to have a more or less Shabby Chic bedroom. The above picture shows the picket fence look that I think would be fun to do. I don’t want a foot board, but the headboard would be fun. I would not make it just like this, but it gives me ideas. We bought a king sized bed. If I go with the white, then I can play with some old stuff made new…Just a thought…what do you think? Oh yes, I do have a white dresser I think is out of the 20’s that has been stored upstairs forever….hummmm!

Let there be light!!!!

DSCN2533 DSCN2534 DSCN2536

Clay finished the electrical this morning and hung our two new lights. We have all new wires and everything. the bottom light is one I have had for years. It was in my daughter Jenny’s room when she was still at home. It works very well at the top of the stairs.

What comes next….dry wall and building the closet. Arney is getting the supplies tomorrow. Yep, we have so much more to do.

Patients….that is my word for the day. Along with dust, and more dust!!!!!

You are probably getting tired of seeing this room…

DSCN2526

The dumpster is gone now…I think will filled it 4 times????

DSCN2527

The carpet is gone…I can hardly wait for the new to come in…first things first. Clay is coming to do the electrical and hang the new lights this evening…everything old is new again.

DSCN2528

This is our new flat screen….we will have it where we can watch it from the bed or from what will be a small setting area. Now to find some really fun stuff. I am not buying new…it will be more fun to find something old and make it work. But our king bed is brand new…….

DSCN2529

As you can see, we are still going through things, and soon the things we are keeping will be stored in the barn until we are ready.

DSCN2530

What is hard….I have crafting things, keepsakes, and the list goes on. Like I shared with Janet, I am becoming the queen of large plastic containers. Wal *mart loves me:)

DSCN2532

As you can see we have a lot of clean up to do, but for now we are living in a dust bowl. Finley is so dirty and he just went to the groomer…….Living with a remodel is very hard…but very rewarding.

It is hot here in Ole Idaho…no rain all summer. We continue to be the catch area for some really large firers……lots of smoke.

Not doing any crafts right now, just working on the Loft…I just love saying Loft….

Yes, I am a goober!!!!!

DSCN2512

Now you can see our bedroom….all the walls are gone. Now the electrical will be done and the lighting put in. mean while the bed will be gone and we got rid of the old dresser. Arney has a lot of dry wall to do, but we will think about that later. I still have things to get rid off, or put into plastic containers.DSCN2514

this view was my daughter Jenny’s room when she was living at home…years ago.

DSCN2515

As you have seen, we are still going through the stuff. I have to get a few more plastic containers.

Yesterday on the way to Finley’s groomers, I stopped at a yard sale.

DSCN2518 DSCN2519 DSCN2520 It is a small corner shelf. I have no idea what I am going to do to it or with it, but i liked it. It was only five dollars. I may go for shabby chick and paint it white. Any ideas????

Lost!

article-new_ehow_images_a07_tc_a1_ways-attract-attention-lost-800x800

Have you ever been lost and did not know it?

Don’t leave home without your cell phone!!!

And don’t forget to charge the darn thing.

We used to just go where we wanted without the phone, but not any longer.

I was in the missing this morning and last night because I did not charge my phone….

And to make things worse, Arney turns his phone off.

So two of my three children were alarmed when they could not reach me. Cory missed out on the drama because he is back east on a business trip.

Phone,,,,living in a new age.

Chapter Story page # 7

This is the last page of my story..if you would like to read from the begaining you will have to go back to page #1.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        I had a lot of time to think, was I put here to wake up to what is going on around us. It is so easy to get into ourselves, living but not really being a part of the big picture. This was a really hard way to get the message. Listening to these girls telling their stories was not easy. They are telling me, we are here; we have all the same feelings as you do. I had understood the civil rights movement. But it was not personal until now. Maybe I did feel superior to them. If you are treated like you do not exist, then how do you feel? In my mind, I think they are agree, and sometimes that causes people to feel like victims, now there is a reason to fight. They had so little, what did they have to loose. What did they see and feel when they looked at me? Where is our heart if all we see is the color of skin? I heard them cry, giggle, talk in words I understood, I saw the worry and the tears, and they saw mine. They cared about me, and that was a beautiful thing. In many ways they looked after me each day, even to the point of telling the nurses things that I had not shared about my health, and I hope that I helped them. Over the years, I wondered if they remembered this little bit of a girl that for just a short time shared in the hot days of summer so close to the fire.

When Arney came to get me, I was so glad to be leaving this hospital. Also an empty feeling rushed over me; one by one we had said our goodbyes. We were all going home that day. I was going home to heal with my husband and family. What would each of these girls find when they returned home, would they still have a home. Their story would be very different from mine after the 6 days in August 1965.

I don’t remember much about the drive home, just feelings rushing through my mind. I looked back at that big hospital;imagesCAFP1OBU it was so large and really beautiful. I never went back there, and if we drove by it I would try not to see it. I had left my baby there. I was no longer a child.

My Parents and siblings lived in Placerville,110523_13_PlacervilleCA-Today California. It was about a 500 mile drive to LA. As I recall my Mother carried a hammer under the seat of the car. She knew she was going into a bad situation, but a hammer? Knowing my Mama, she could have done some damage. It was dangerous for them to come into this awful mess. August 14th, 1965….. by 1 a.m. there were around 100 fire brigades in the areas, trying to put out fires started by rioters. Over 3,000 national guardsmen had joined the police by this time in trying to maintain order on the streets. Mama came in with the Sacramento National Guard. By midnight there were around 13,900 guardsmen in the area….   times_watts02Watts_30_1965_1                                                                      My sister Sharon has her own story about this time in our life. Sharon and my brother Bret were little kids… Sharon wrote… Mom, Bret and I drove to see you and were surrounded by the National Guard, they told Mom to stay in the middle of them, so they could protect us from the bullets. Bret and I had to lie down in the seats. I know we were at your house the day Arney brought you home and carried you up the stairs to your apartment. I remember seeing the helicopters just a few blocks over and the fires and smoke. Lots of noise. And standing on the walkway in front of your apartment and seeing the war in the next neighborhood and being very frightened. Sure brings back memories. A sad time in our lives. Arney called us in the middle of the night, I don't know what day it was but Mom and Dad were sleeping and I couldn't wake either one of them up to answer the phone. So Arney talked to me and I told him I would have Mom call as soon as I could wake her. Next thing I knew, Mom, Bret and I were in the car headed to L.A. A long trip and we were in a hurry, I think we only stopped long enough to get gas. By evening we were driving up the Grape Vine, grapevine-thumb and it was very dark. The National Guard had surrounded our vehicle and drove in with us, protecting us from flying bullets. It was so frightening. Bret and I lay down in the seats of the car just in case one of those bullets made it thru to our car. I don't remember if we went straight to the hospital or to the apartment. But we were there when Arney brought you home and carried you up those stairs. I don't know how long we stayed with you but it was very upsetting to see the smoke and fires, helicopters and fire trucks, knowing that it could come just another block or two and we would be in the middle of it all. Suitcases were packed for a hasty retreat. I don't remember going home; I just remember not wanting to leave you and Arney there. I love you

Thank you Sharon, as you must know it brought tears reading your words and remembering that you were 13 and so grown up. And our Bret had just turned 7 years old.

Big hugs!!!!

I was so glad to see my mama, my sister and brother. I melted into my mother’s arms. Just to see their faces was so healing. We had all lost this baby boy; he would always be a part of us. They were in real danger coming here. Mama and Arney had talked about going up to grandma Neely’s when I got home if things had not gotten better. Lynwood was being taken over, and that was to close.

By night fall the National Guard had a show of power and things changed very fast. But the smoke and unrest hung on in little pockets. They did not want to stop fighting, but soon even that had stopped.

Arney needed my Mother; he had no support from his family. No one came to be with him except my Mama, Sharon and Bret. Arney’s branch of our family lived in other parts of Los Angeles County. Sometimes you just have to get over it. We watched the news and things were calming down, we knew that soon Mama would have to go home. Dad would be waiting for his family. Mama took all that we had bought or made for the baby. I needed these reminders to be gone because everything upset me to the point of being ill. Arney played with Bret. Mama, Sharon and I spent most of the time in my bedroom. So much healing went on for Arney and me in the days they were with us. I could hardly bear the thought that they would go home. Saying good bye was so hard, stay with me, don’t go ran through my head over and over, but as they pulled away, I wanted to go with them. Arney had his arms around me as I cried uncontrollable. Crying for my baby boy that I never would know, but have always loved. Crying for the man who loved me unconditionally. My heart was broken for us all, so much had happened in one short summer.Scan10008 (2)

As time went by, we grew not only as a couple, but we had established a good life, one we were proud of. But the missing part was we wanted a child to love. 4 different doctors had told us that because I only had one or two periods a year, they could not give me a good outcome for having a baby. And the treatments could cause multiple births and often they did not live. One morning before the sun came up we found ourselves talking about adoption. This would not be a easy journey, but one we were excited to take.

In 1968 we adopted Trevor Lee Evans at 18 days old from Children home Society of Long Beach, California. We were in love with him from the moment we held him, probably before. My parents along with my sister and brother moved to southern California to be near us. When Trevor was 81/2 months old I gave birth to Steven Cory Evans. He was our miracle baby since I had no idea I was pregnant. I found out there was a baby when I was six months along. I was busy and he was hiding out. When Cory was 21/2 years old I gave birth to Jennifer Anne Evans. The little girl my husband had to have…a bottle of wine and thee! Each a blessing. “My cup runith over.”

Thank you for taking this journey with me. We all have stories; most will never be told in the way that I have. But no less important to each of our lives. Your comments have been so special; it made me want to continue writing. A very special thanks to my

Sister Sharon who continues to support me in many life changing times. I love you too, Sis
