Family...Ruth becoming Lonely

I don't wish them any harm of course, but it would be okay if they didn't visit to often, mostly never.

my other cousins are really nice and we have good times together. Aunt Margaret has neglected to teach that some things are very " rude."

Although everyone lives in different towns and even states...they get together for special times. More family picture to paste in the picture book/Journal. Della Mae makes me paste from flour and water. Sometimes I get to use the store bought paste.
When Ruth decided to share her life in the tablet she had allot of help from the picture box and Nurse Nancy. I think Ruth felt the need to be known, to have a life force that was real. She started to believe that she was fading away, out of site, out of mind. Father always said, 'Children can be see, but not heard. Ruth was smart and that made her isolation much harder. Her mind was clear and her abandonment was real to her as time went by. Ruth was lonely.

Della Mae, Martha, Cordelia, Dr.Brown, Dr. Harper,Sydney and Nancy

These are the people in Ruth's life that she often called her friends. Her days were filled with their presents. Della Mae loved her, but often would scoot her out of the kitchen. Martha was fun, almost like having another child in the house, but she worked hard. Martha knew everything that went on in the Carpenter house and often shared things she shouldn't. Cordelia is beautiful and keeps to herself, but Martha thinks she secretly cares for Sydney. She says they talk in the back yard sometimes and she thinks he took her hand one morning...of course she wasn't sure of what she saw. Dr Brown calls me little miss. Father thinks we need to give him a room in the house since he is here so often. Dr. Brown has a small buggy pulled by Gobber his old horse. Gobber can be lazy, you can sometimes hear him yelling at Gobber as he goes down the Avenue. Dr Harper was so kind she put him on her list of friends. Sydney is Fathers right hand man and a hard worker. He loves to play games when he is not busy. He has the biggest bag of Marbles I have ever seen and beats me every time. Sydney says I am the little princess of the Painted Lady. And then there is Nurse Nancy, she is my teacher, my friends and she cares for my every need. Aren't Friends wonderful, they like you even when you are naughty....

Being Ruth

A charm that I made for me....

I think this saying is very useful at this time. It has gotten a lot of attention from strangers. I know these are hard times for so many and as a child I remember coming home from school and taking my shoes off because no matter what, it was my shoes for the school year. Does anyone remember brown and white Oxfords....I hated them. It was common to have steele taps put on your shoes to help them to last. Also off to the shoes repair man for a new sole, the shoe would be smiling at me. I had church shoes, just for church. They were Mary Jane's and no telling how long I wore them...I can remember when I first got this pair they gave me blisters because they were to big and then later curling my toes and wishing church would hurry and get over so I could take them off. Are these bad memories, no....it was just how it is a and we have forgotten how to be a little uncomfortable to put food on the table. When I tell my kids stories about my childhood it is a mistery to them, they have no idea what this life was all about. Thats okay, but now I wonder if they have the tools to step back and make do.

Ruth is born

St. Louis was growing into a real city when Ruth came into the world. The Victorians loved their large homes and shopped in England and Paris. Ruth's parents were very busy...they had been working on the Cafe' for about 5 years when little Ruth was born. They were excited about their new baby girl. She was perfect. Rachael loved to spoil Ruth Anne, and spent as much time as she could with her.Nurse Nancy was with Ruth most of the time while Rachael was the hostess of the Cafe'. Rachael was the greeter and made sure that they were served well. The Cafe' was beautiful. And always busy. Ruth's clothes were made just for her, and Rachael loved to show her off. As little Ruth started walking and talking it was clear that she was not a easy toddler. She was very active, she became very hard to control. Father and Mother did not know each other until after they had finished their schooling. They lived in the same town, but because Father went away to school in New York they had never met. But fate took a hand, they met at a party in the club house in Lafayette Square. They had a year engagement before getting married. Mother was considered middle class and Father Old money, and a man of wealth.

Most girls were educated at home, but Grandpa Townsand had 4 girls and he wanted them to have a education in school. Rachael was shy so it was decided that going to 18th St. School would be good for her and Jane. One by one the girls started school, and at home they were taught the art of being a lady. They would one day run their own homes and there were rules and fashion. Knowing how to help their husbands and become great ladies.
